Physical Asset Management

Physical Asset Management, also known simply as asset management and infrastructure asset management, is an advanced management process for physical systems that focuses on long term delivery of system functions to a specified level currently and into the future.

Physical Asset Management is a synergistic combination of classical maintenance strategies with those that are strategies focused on longevity of systemic functions spanning multiple individual lifetimes of physical assets.  In essence, Physical Asset Management centers on the functions and roles of individual physical assets rather than on the physical assets themselves.  Although there is commonality in tools and practices between classical maintenance and physical asset management, the change in central focus makes important differences.

Physical Asset Management is becoming well known around the world, particularly by public utilities.  Its value is well established and it is highly adaptable to various systems and organizational cultures.  However, until now very little standardization or practical guidelines have been available.  This leaves many organizations with a need and desire to use Physical Asset Management, but without the ability to make an effective start.
